As a radio listener and cell phone user I strongly support the FCC?s Migratory
Bird Notice of Inquiry. I feel that it is imperative that we develop our national
infrastructure in such a way that is of least impact to our natural
environment. The communication industry currently sights towers in the
most advantageous locations with no regard for the migratory fly ways of our
nation. I am adamant about holding these corporations/companies etc.
responsible for the manner in which their towers are sighted and erected
such that they should be obligated to do so in a manner that is least
threatening to avian species. The current practice of sighting towers is
simply irresponsible. The FCC, as a federal entity, should be protecting the
economic, safety and environmental interests of our nation.
I understand that corporate interests have raised concern that adequate
science for avoiding tower related avian fatalities is inadequate. That is no
excuse for failing to take prompt measures to avoid further avian fatalities;
it?s simply an avoidance of regulation tactic. Environmentally sound (i.e.
avian safe) methods of erecting new and retrofitting existing towers should be
decided upon by a colloquial gathering of both industrial and ornithological
interests. This should be done by those intersected in working together and
not by those working against one another. All conflicts must be mediated
through compromise.
